So Far, So Good

It's been 2 days since I've been studying for my upcoming ISTQB certification exam..so far so good. I came home late tonight coz I had my regular Wednesday church group meeting. I'm actually not sure if i'll be able to reach my 2 hour quota today; there is a high probabality that I would not so I'd just make up for it in the next days....

It's been such a busy month at work but I'm still glad that I'm able to insert some relaxing and exciting events in my schedule - such as Tagaytay trip with college friends, Linden suites with family, David Cook concert with Accenture friends and 2 movies with dreamspinner_ - Wolverine and Angels & Demons!!!

We were advised that we might have work again this weekend - to think that my MBA classes are gonna start this Saturday!. Well, at least I only took 1 class except that I have to wake up early on a Saturday and be at school by 8 freaking am!!! I am not a morning person, so good luck to me!

I suddenly remembered that I actually dreamnt of David Cook last night! It was awesome! In my dream, he came back to Manila and will be having a limited seats concert this Saturday! Of course, this time around, I was scrambling to get front row seats :p

Based from the YouTube videos that I've been watching, it seems that American fans are a more engaging concert audience. They really know the lyrics and sing-along and I guess the venues are smaller so those who go are really solid fans of the artist. Another thing is that not everyone is holding a video camera and recording the event. They are more intent in experiencing the event as it is transpiring than recording it for posterity. I think the former is the better option of the two.

Having said that, I just wish that I'd be able to watch a David Cook concert in the future. The how and when cannot be determined as of the moment, so my desire would have to do. (Doesn't working for ASCAP in which David is a member of have some bearing??)

We have a project portal where we can put our avatar / picture so it shows up beside the messages or comments we post on work related discussions. I changed my picture a while ago to David Cook's! Maybe someone will notice and introduce us! harhar :p

Word Nerd - Words of the week.

Chagrin n. (sh-grn)

Definition: A keen feeling of mental unease, as of annoyance or embarrassment, caused by failure, disappointment, or a disconcerting event.

tr.v. cha·grined, cha·grin·ing, cha·grins

Personal Source: Noticed that David Cook used this twice already among the hundreds of interviews I watched. The meaning that I knew of chagrin was just embarassment, apparently it could also be annoyance.

"Much to Simon's chagrin, I came here as the word nerd and now I'm at a loss for words" - after being announced the winner of American Idol Season 7

"Much to my manager's chagrin, I am this close to getting a dog"

So I guess the one about the dog is more of annoyance.

Heady
adj. (hd)

Definition:
1.
a. Intoxicating or stupefying: heady liqueur.
b. Tending to upset the mind or the balance of senses: standing on a heady outcrop of rock.
c. Serving to exhilarate: the heady news of triumph.
2.
a. Impetuous and rash: a heady outburst of anger.
b. Domineering; overbearing: too heady to reason with.
3. Swift and violent; headlong: a heady current.
4. Showing intelligence and good judgment; prudent: heady tactics.
5. Suffering from a headache: a heady, throbbing feeling.

Personal Source:
"...it's equivalent to walking into church naked - just this idea that what i'm feeling is being put on public display, it's pretty heady but i think in order for..." - David Cook on MTV Buzznet interview

I am actually not sure which of the possible definitions of heady fit this statement of his!

Word Nerd - words of the week.

triage
tri·age (trē-äzh', trē'äzh')

Personal Source: Aldrich said this was the word used by his Texan clients in their approach with solving the multitude of issues in the application that they are working on.

Dictionary: n.
  1. A process for sorting injured people into groups based on their need for or likely benefit from immediate medical treatment. Triage is used in hospital emergency rooms, on battlefields, and at disaster sites when limited medical resources must be allocated.
  2. A system used to allocate a scarce commodity, such as food, only to those capable of deriving the greatest benefit from it.
  3. A process in which things are ranked in terms of importance or priority: “For millions of Americans, each week becomes a stressful triage between work and home that leaves them feeling guilty, exhausted and angry” (Jill Smolowe).
tr.v., -aged, -ag·ing, -ag·es.

To sort or allocate by triage: triaged the patients according to their symptoms.

[French, from trier, to sort, from Old French.]

Fuge
fugue (fyūg)

Personal Source: part of the lyrics in the song Bar-ba-sol. Album by David Cook.

Dictionary: n.
  1. Music. An imitative polyphonic composition in which a theme or themes are stated successively in all of the voices of the contrapuntal structure.
  2. Psychiatry. A pathological amnesiac condition during which one is apparently conscious of one's actions but has no recollection of them after returning to a normal state. This condition, usually resulting from severe mental stress, may persist for as long as several months.

[Italian fuga (influenced by French fugue, from Italian fuga), from Latin, flight.]

fugal fu'gal (fyū'gəl) adj.
fugally fu'gal·ly adv.
fugue fugue v.
fuguist fugu'ist (fyū'gĭst) n.

Ipso Facto
ip·so fac·to (ĭp'sō făk')

Personal Source: "The girls aren't even allowed in our bus, ipso facto, they don't know how the inside of our bus looks like" - David Cook interview on American Idol Tour.

Dictionary: adv.

By the fact itself; by that very fact: An alien, ipso facto, has no right to a U.S. passport.

[New Latin ipsō factō : Latin ipsō, ablative of ipse, itself + Latin factō, ablative of factum, fact.]

Da Vinci Code vs. Angels and Demons

I actually liked the puzzles in Da Vinci Code better.. fibionacci.. cryptex.. sangria.. roslin. The puzzles in Angels and Demons seem to center on the statues and what they point at. However, pace-wise, A&D is definitely a lot more exciting. I wasn't even able to finish my drink (very rare occassion) because my heart was pounding so fast and I was going crazy over the suspense of it all!!

A&D is of course less controversial, it's more contemporary and the story is quite typical actually.

Hmmmmm. being the nerd that I am. I'd say I like Da Vinci Code better :) Had fun watching with Aisa, my official movie buddy! yey!

Missing Blogging...

I miss blogging!!! So many things to share about recent events like the David Cook / David Archuleta concert that I attended last weekend plus the sleepover at Gia's place and swimming and eating lunch at Somm's!!!

I realized that I didn't even share about my feedback on the Putnam spelling bee a few months back. Hmm.. also watched Wolverine with Aisa some time ago... oh and Linden Suites overnight during Mother's day weekend

Interspersed with those happy activites are loads of overtime work and lack of sleep due to different reasons.. mostly internet related.

Hopefully, I'll still have time to expound all of these next time!

External Hard Drive: To Buy or Not To Buy

I just bought JBL Spyro Speakers yesterday from Avant and also A4 Tech earphones since my current earphones keep falling from my head (they're not adjustable!!) and my speakers alter songs to make them sound ugly hahaha (i.e. I raised my eyebrow after hearing Jonas Brother's Lovebug using my speakers but liked the song when I listened to it via earphones! Isn't that odd?)

Anyway, right now I'm contemplating whether to buy an external hard drive since I only have around 2.5 GB left in my data drive and the Bones and Big Bang series show no signs of stopping for the next seasons.

Of course, this would entail thousands of money again so I considered an alternative: burn the episodes into CD-Rs! (because I only have a CD writer)

Season 4 of Bones has currently 25 episodes so if I burn all of them, I would need around 13 CDs (only 2 series per cd) which can be bought for Php10 at CDR King. That sums up to Php130 only! Very cheap, but bulky and it takes time to burnnnnn.....

Basically, it's cost vs. efficiency

Decisions, decisions....

On Friendship...finally!

Friendship is not about getting along perfectly with another person, but it is getting along even if you disagree on certain things.
It seems that I only have matured now on this aspect because it is only now that i have realized and experienced this reality. I was too selfish and misguided before to understand the real meaning of friendship.
